The Cost of Dying

It's a hotly debated topic. Many feel the xp loss and durability loss are too high, should you decide not to try and find your tombstone, or do a corpse run. Sure, you can consent a group member to drag your corpse, or retrieve your items but it's not really commonly done, is it? If you are lucky enough to have a healer in your group and can be rezzed, it's a little better. But the 8-11% xp loss has caused quite a few groans from the community. Some classes get hit harder with repair bills than others, too.

With the new changes upcoming on test server, many *others* are asking if the game isn't becoming too soft. Stiff death penalties make the game seem more real, they say. The new system will not leave a corpse or items on the corpse, but will leave an essence that cannot be summoned. If you retrieve the essence you retrieve some of the xp loss.

So here is a poll. Vote and tell us what you think!

I say until the game handles some of the major bugs like pet pathing, mob warping, balance issues and the like...a stiff penalty only leads to frustration. Especially if you're hit 3-5 times in a row on something.

In the short-term yes try and write some code that recognise deaths while chunking, falling for no reason etc - but only if it's vastly quicker to do than fixing the issues themselves.

Bad analogy maybe but altering the DP to accomodate bugs... it's like leaving food rotting in your bin and fighting the flies in your house with fly spray... take the trash out and the problem's going to stop. Fix the bugs & performance issues that cause unwarranted deaths and the death penalty won't be such an issue.

When you appear at an altar, automatically start the dialogue to summon corpse and make it clear you can CR or summon - solves the "we didn't know we could" issue.

Keeps the economy impact of soulbinding or not.

Finally speed up all forms of transport - maybe double up speed of mounts and horses, let people get groups together much faster, and do the boring part of CR, the running bit, much quicker.

Had to register just to answer this poll.

I feel that current death penalty system is good, there's NO POINT making life easier out there. Actually I would like even more exp-eq-money loss, or something like ress-sickness or anything like that. And in pvp... make people think before attacking other player. If they don't have anything to lose... sure this game will be gankfest. But if they might lose something (non-bind minor items from bags....), it will be great. Of course those changes need more optimized pvp system.

Current system is good, because we don't need to corpserun if we soulbind our items. If we don't.... well we knew the risks. If you are too greedy and don't want to bind your equipment, because you want to sell it later.. well it's your choise, but you might lose it (by pvp/pve).

Of course if we die by bugs, chunks and so on... I think there could be less exp-loss, but... I would keep system just like it is now and focus on other more important things and bugs in game.

Make more important fixes first (bugs, chunks, falling through ground....?) and after that when you know your game better, do changes like this if still needed.

I don't really mind the xp loss, but the durability hit drives me nuts, but this isn't a thread about durability...And the fact that most of the time when you die there is no way to get your corpse back either really hurts for both the huge xp and durability hits you have to almost always take.

So I like the part about your equipment staying with you when you revive. At least you'll be able to do corpse runs in most of the places you die in now. I know I could bind the items to me however due to soloing most of the time selling the items on the broker seems about the only way to make enough to still have enough to buy new stuff after repairing it all all the time.

However I do think they should keep the same death penalties xp wise as if they make it too low there will be no reason to get your corpse back and they'll wind up taking that entire thing out of the game just like they did in EQ2.

For the Mods out there: Is there any chance we can get a link to this specific thread on the opening TTH page? Perhaps sticky it or something, so that all of the people who come through will have a chance to vote as well as give the Devs something to see?

Changul

I will see what can be done, LadyG.

I tend to soulbind all my armor and weapons. The problem with dying only affects me as far as repair costs, xp loss, and then all of my harvesting tools and crafting gear (tools, solvents, etc). I can't bind those, it seems. I supose I could move crafting gear to bank, but what a pita!

Tallenn

The death penalty system is perfect just as it is now.

I liked the death penalty system in EQ, but it had one problem. If you died close to the time when you had to log off, you were either forced to stay on to CR, or try to get it done the next day- without the support of the group you were in the night before. I always thought they should add the ability to summon your corpse (and make it non-rezable) at a significant cost (so that it was a last resort type solution) to address that problem. In fact, when they added the corpse summoners in the guild hall with I think the DoN expansion, they basically did just that. EQ now has a near perfect death penalty system.

Vanguard's is even better. Leave it the way it is.

As folks are beginning to realize, the "many" are not many at all, but only the few who holler enough to seem like a lot.

This poll is very interesting in that regard, and so far with the results, number one being 17 and all the rest have yet to break into double digits.

Something tells me however, that 99.9% of the people could chose number 1 and the changes will be made anyways. Not because they are "WoWifying" the game, nope. No way. They are "SOEifying" it.

The reasons Sigil gave are leaning towards the reduction in Petitions to the CS Team.

They are not thinking outside of the box.

How about implimenting a Guide program like they did in the old days of EQ1? Isn't that better, to have a player run system for filtering out trivial petitions and forward the ones that need serious attention to the CS Team GMs?

Guides could corpse summon and toon summon (for falling under the world), could change surnames or erase them, would perform in game weddings when they were not busy, and mingling with the people in Cities passing out summoned cookies and milk that were no rent.

All the stuff that reduces petitions they did, and the players had fun while doing it.

I would like to hear it. Why not, Sigil?

ps... I voted number 1.

Ok call me a masochist but the death penalty as it stands right now is already a tad too easy in my book so dumbing it down further is, IMO, in no way necessary.

It wont make me quit the game, but I do like, when im deep in a dungeon, knowing that any mistake would be paid full price and results in a hard CR. I loved the EQ1 systems except minor things (the deleveling, not the xp loss mind you, and the 24h timers on corpse) and would wish VG to have about the same system (without the two things i didnt like). Im fully aware that it is in no way what most people would want so Im not calling for it, only expressing my opinion.

Currently, by either binding your items or summoning your corpse at altar, you have ways to avoid the CRs at a little cost (No resales of items or loss of xp + durability hit). FD, invi and a lot of other ways can already be used to make a CR nice and easy. Im not very fond of the altar thing either and would rather have some classes get the summoning corpse ability for a rather high cost.

I understand the rational behind this is to work around bugs and petitions for missing items (Happened to me so yes it happens for all of those that do doubt the reality of those incidents) or corpse under the world. I just think that the answer isnt appropriate.
