Mini-Guide to Crafting for Questers

Forgive me if this is somewhere and I missed it.

I'm often seeing requests in /craft that indicate confusion from crafter and quester alike when trying to make items for quests, and am hoping these small pointers will help save some frustrating/costly mistakes.

Gems must be cut to the resistance version not the attribute version

Continental style (where applicable) must match the continent where the quest starts

Know your attuning dusts!

1. Gems must be cut to resistance: A "trilliant cut quartz jewel", for example, uses the "quartz jewel" refine recipe (artificer), cut first to trilliant, then to resistance. Cutting to attribute instead would give you a "____ trilliant cut quartz jewel" that will not work for the quests. This is THE most common confusion that I see from newer artisans that are trying to help with quest gems.

2. Continental style must match the continent where the quest starts. For any normal item that has a continental version of the recipe, you must match the continent to the quest. If a quest on Qalia requires copper gauntlets, for example, the blacksmith involved in the crafting must use the Qalian style version of the recipe. (Non-Qalian native crafters will have to do continental style quests in order to obtain the proper recipe, if they haven't already done so, which can be confusing in and of itself). Make sure quester and crafter alike know which style is needed before crafting begins to save some frustration with items that won't be accepted by the quest. (The only place where there are exceptions to this is for certain class quests where you are provided specific quest recipes. In that case, some, not all, classes get a generic temporary recipe to make an item that is not continent-specific)

3. Know your T1/T2 attuning dusts! If someone wants a "charlatan's stave" for example, you not only need to know the continental style, but you need a way to figure out "oh, charlatan's is tier 1, which means they need an attuning dust of intelligence, AND it will be a weakened wood stave recipe for ____ continent". It isn't obvious (until someone points it out to you!), but tier 1 and tier 2 recipes create uniquely-named items when dusted, and you can figure out from there which tier recipe and which dust is needed. Taken from Thorsen's VERY handy crafting guide:

Attribute: Tier 1 Name, Tier 2 Name

• Intelligence: Charlatan’s Grifter’s

• Wisdom: Mystic’s Oracle’s

• Strength: Sentry’s Protector’s

• Dexterity: Brigand’s Brute’s

• Vitality: Votary’s Fanatics

• Constitution: Drifter’s Wayfarer’s

4. Even if you have the right item, your journal might not update! This is a known feature. receiving items in email, such as from the exchange, doesn't always update your quest log. The NPC, however, doesn't have that problem and will accept the proper items regardless of if the journal updates. If you want to be sure you've got the right item, you can relog, or sell the item to a vendor then immediately buy it back or other such stuff (dying works, too, but isn't a personal favorite of mine ;D) and get the journal to update that way.

As I said, just a mini-guide, but hopefully it will help solve some confusion.

Nice guide.

However, I disagree with the advice given in point number 2.

I just completed the Artificer Initiate quests for Thestra, Qalia and Kojan. Both the Thestran and Qalian quests require that you go to Konarthi Point and Pankor Zhi respectively and look around to "gain inspiration". I have every reason to believe the Kojan quest is the same sort of thing, but I never bothered to actually look at the quest dialogue when I got the quest.

The Thestran and Qalian quests both required that you make 3 wooden clubs each after gaining a recipe through inspiration. I made 9 clubs at Konarthi Point and was able to complete all three quests. With the Qalian quest I never visited Pankor Zhi. With the Kojan quest I obtained the quest after I had already made the clubs then turned it in right away.

Clearly in this case, continental style was irrelevant. Furthermore it doesn't appear to be a class specific issue, because I got this tip from an outfitter at Konarthi Point.

I am unaware whether this shortcut can be applied to lower tier quests.

I am hoping it does apply to T5 quests

Just 2cents from a forum lurker.

Edit: I am sure the OPs advice is correct for non-tier quests, but perhaps this needs to be checked.

I've tried to make #2 a bit clearer, and added a #4.

Style DOES matter - but only where there are multiple styles of the recipe available. Special tier quest recipes sometimes are style specific and sometimes are not, and weren't what I was originally targeting this guide at. (Generic crafting quests don't get special quest recipes, and folks frequently forget to ask for the specific continental style when asking a crafter of another class to make the item for them.)

Let me know if there's any further tightening up or clarification I can do to this.

Question lets say i need 2 mystic jute cloth bolt for a quest, do i need 2 attuning dust or is it enough if i create lets say 3 cloth bolts and add 1 dust during the crafting process?

Very nice post. I was just answering questions about gem-cuts last night thinking "gee, i wish this info was easier for people to get =/".
