He shrugs and says, "Do I make as much as I would like? No. But who does? Except maybe the King. And who knows, maybe even old Targonor wants more." "Isn't that the nature of it?" he asks. "Always wanting more..." You say, "Yes, that is true, but there is such a thing as too little. How do you get by? Does all your money go to your basics?" He nods and says, "I don't spend much on anything but food and a roof." "A new pair of clothes when the winter comes, maybe, and a drink every now and then to celebrate good tidings," he says, "but we can't afford much else." "And how much do you work down here?" you ask. He says, "I usually leave home about an hour before sunrise and get back an hour after." "That's madness!" you say. "All that work and you can only afford to live! You deserve better." "You really think so?" he asks curiously. You nod and say, "That's a wager that only a lazy man deserves! If they want to pay you that little, then you should do equally little work. You deserve better." He frowns and says, "You know you're right. I deserve better!" "Then support the union," you say. "Support worker's rights!" "All right!" he says. "Count me in!" "Form a Union!" (2) You say, "NPC, I need you to listen to me." "What is it?" he asks. "You and your fellow deckhands are being treated with a negligence that can only be described as criminal," you say. "Oh?" he asks. "How is that?" "You barely make enough to get by on," you say, "and yet you are out here, ravaged by the sun and salt air, for hours on end." "Why do you put up with it?" you ask. "Well," he says, blinking, "I guess I never thought to question it. I've always thought myself lucky just to have a job." "You are selling yourself short," you say. "You deserve a decent wage. One that would give you some comforts." "What's the use of wanting something you can't have?" he asks. "The wages are what they are." "Band together with the other dockhands," you say. "With numbers, you'll have power." "You can demand a better wage," you say, "and shorter hours. And if you take collective measures to make sure they take your demands seriously, you will surely get them. Form a union of laborers fighting for justice!" He nods slowly and then more vigorously. "I want to believe it can work," he says, "and I think it is worth the effort. I"ll join in this union!" "Form a Union!" (3) "NPC, do you know what unity means?" you ask. He nods and says, "Sort of. A bunch of people who are all somehow together?" You nod and say, "Unity can come from all manner of sources and come in all different ways." "But at its core, it signifies working together toward a common goal, ideal etcetera," you say. "Believing that at our core, we are all connected, and dependent on one another. And that in order for one person to succeed, we all have to." He nods and says, "So what of it?" "A union is a group formed with that idea in mind," you say, "and works toward bringing about positive change for its members." "There are some people here at the docks who think a dockworker's union is necessary," you say. "Oh?" asks NPC. "Why's that?" "Because you work long hours for little pay," you say, "and that needs to change." "And this union would make that change?" asks NPC incredulously. "That would be the goal," you say. "I am not sure I believe it," he says. "To start, I'm not sure if you'll find unity here. I doubt you'll find many wanting to work for the good of others. But more than that, I just don't think it would do any good." "And if the union could find that unity?" you ask. "Would you at least try?" He shrugs and says, "Prove me wrong on that point, and yes, maybe I'll hang around to see you prove me wrong on the other. "Form a Union!" (4) "Do you have a family, NPC? you ask. He nods and says, "A wife and three girls." "Do you bring in your family's only wage?" you ask. "No, he says, shaking his head. "We could never live off what I make. My wife patches up clothes for wealthy merchants." "If you could make enough, would she stop working?" you ask. He shrugs and says, "The thought of me making enough is a but hard to believe... but yes. If she could be there for the girls all the time, I think we would both rather it were so. don't want them growing up without any guidance." "What if I said there was a way to make that happen?" you ask. He looks at you puzzled, and says, "I would ask you how you though to do it." "A union," you say. "If all the dockworkers rally together, you can force people to listen. Then you can demand a fair wage." He says, "Well, it's a nice idea, but do you think it would actually work?" "The dockworkers in Khal are doing it," you say, "and seeing results. Come now, think of your family. Aren't they worth at least trying it?" He looks thoughtful. Finally he nods resolutely. "Yes, yes they are. Consider me a a part of this union." Quest Completion A trimphant grin spreads across Willem's face. "You say they're chomping at the bit? Good to hear!" He slaps you hard across the back and says, "Soon enough, we'll have a fair day's pay for a fair day's work!"
