Choosing A Warden

Survey Raki within the Hall of Tomes regarding who they think should serve as Warden of the Raki. Speak with one Petitioner, one Guard, one Scholar, and one Elder. Elder "Your advice is needed, <npc name>," you say. "Oh?" asks <npc name>. "What about?" "Who do you think would be a good choice to be Warden of the Raki?" "Ah," says <npc name>, "yes, that... I still maintain that you would." <npc name> grins at you. "We know it's probably not for the best," you say, "and besides, I'm interested in furthering our interests outside of Ca'ial Brael." "Fair enough," says <npc name>. "It's good to know we'll still have you advocating for us." "Now, a good Warden," say <npc name>. "I don't think I would be a bad choice." "Very true," you say, "you are, after all, an Elder. You have experience handling the wants and needs of the raki people already. And also working on a council, albeit a smaller one." "Yes," says <npc name>, nodding, "but let me finish. All that you say is true, but I am not my own official nomination." "Becuase while all of this is true, it is even more true of Elder Sal," says <npc name>. "As you have seen from your own experience with her, she really takes charge of everything." "She has been an Elder longer than any of the rest of us," continues <npc name>, "and she has proven herself capable time and time again." "So, Elder Sal is your pick?" you ask. "Yes," says <npc name>, "don't you agree with me?" "I do," you say. "She's an excellent choice." Scholar "<npc name>," you say, "I'm sorry to interrupt your studies..." "It's alright," says <npc name> with a sharp look. "You're developing a reputation as a distractor... but the things you have to say are worthwhile." "Why, thank you," you say. "Don't let it go to your head," says <npc name>, "and get to your point. You're not worth losing a whole day of study over." "I'll get right to it then," you say. "We need to chose from among our people someone to become the Warden of the Raki." "So we won a place on the council then?" asks <npc name>. You nod. "Hmm, interesting..." <npc name> appears to vanish into their thoughts. "Do you have any thoughts?" you ask, probling. "Oh? Hmm," says <npc name>. "Well, I don't think any of the scholars should go... we've all too much to do here." "Yes," you say, "that seems prudent." You think to yourself, "Not to mention their lack of focus on anything but a book." "One of the Elders should do a good job," says <npc name>. "They're already familiar with our collective affairs." "Do you have a recommendation among them?" you ask. "I think Elder Sal is the most capable of them," says Scholar Ravel. "She's already the acting head of their little group. She always steps forward when no one else will." "And she was a great scholar when she was younger," says <npc name> with a wink. "So you know she's smart enough." "Elder Sal," you repeat, "Really?" "You don't agree?" asks <npc name>. "Have you had any dealing with her?" "Oh no, I've had a number," you say, "and I'm mostly surprised that I didn't think of it myself." Guard I'm sorry to interrupt your watch, <npc name>, but I need your opinion on an important matter," you say. <npc name> glances you up and down and asks, "What's that?" "We are trying to decide who should represent our people on the Ca'ial Brael council," you say. "If you haven't heard, we earned a spot for a Warden of the Raki." "I heard something of it, yes," says <npc name>. "Do you have any opinions then on who should fill that position?" you ask. "I see a lot of what happens in this Hall," says Peck. "Whether I'm outside of it or in, it's always in my view." "I've seen the best and worst of many of our people," says <npc name>, "so it's hard to pick someone." "But if you want to know the truth," says <npc name>, "I think the most even-tempered, wise, and well-spoken member of our race is Elder Sal." "Really?" you ask. "Elder Sal?" "Yes," says <npc name>, "she has a kind word for everyone, but she also has a scolding as well. She is the first Elder to offer insight when an important decision arises, and the last to give up." "I think she's a good pick," says Peck with a stiff nod. "Well," you say, "that does all sound very compelling. Thank you." Petitioner "<npc name>," you say, "Have you heard? We're going to have a Warden of the Raki on the Ca'ial Brael council." "Oh?" asks <npc name> idly. "Which of the elves was willing to take that one?" "Oh no," you say, "you misunderstand me. One of us is going to be on the council." "What?" asks <npc name>. "Really? How were they convinced of that?" "Carefuly negotiations," you say with a grin. "Very careful negotiations." "Such as?" asks <npc name>, pushing you. "Well," you say, "we pointed out the ills that have been done to us, how much we have contributed to the Glade, and the possibility that if we were not treated equally, we could leave." "And it didn't hurt to point out how the knowledge we have accumulated over the millennia could benefit them," you say. "Oh," says <npc name>, "I see. That sounds like a pretty convincing package to me." "So?" you ask. "Who would you like to see represent us?" "Well," says <npc name>, "this is all very sudden. I think I would have to think about it. Who orchestrated all of this? I'm sure they're a good choice." "Well," you say, "I did, but the Elders and I think I'm the wrong choice. We're going to come into that council with a lot of resentment to work against." "But I would have even more than anyone else," you admit. "I see," says Whent thoughtfully. "Well, I can't say right now, but I'm sure one of the Elders would do a good job." Elder Sal "Elder Sal," you say with a wide smile, "I do believe we have a candidate." "Oh?" asks Elder Sal. "Wonderful, who is it? And did they have wide support?" "Oh very wide," you say, "everyone who could give me an answer named them." "That makes me feel very good about their appointment," says Elder Sal with a smile. "You think this should qualify an appointment?" you ask. "Well, so long as all four of us agree to it," says Elder Sal, "and we give people time to lodge complaints." "And so long as the individual wants the position, of course," says Elder Sal. "It often enough happens that everyone will see some potential in someone that they cannot, and will not, see in themselves." "Do you have that problem, Elder Sal?" you ask. "Me?" asks Elder Sal. "Well, when I was first asked to be an Elder, I had my reservations about my capabilities..." "But the best leaders are those who do not think that they should be leaders, though others know they should," you say. "Oh true enough," says Elder Sal, "though I won't claim that's the case with me..." "Why don't we see for ourselves?" you ask. "What do you mean by that, <player name>?" asks Elder Sal. "I mean to say that you were the one everyone wanted to be our Warden," you say with a smile. Quest Completion "Me?" asks Elder Sal with an amazed look. "I, my goodness! What an honor..." "I suppose I will have to eat my own words now," she says with a smile. "I have no choice but accept aftet that fine little speech I gave. That is not to say I don't think I am a good pick. I will do my best to represent us. I may need a few lessons in dealing with the elves from you though." She gives you a wink. "Here... a few gifts for you," she says.
