Poet Liong studies you critically, and says, "Juritor, the only reason you could desire that is to speak with our ancestors, our honored dead." You nod and smile. Poet Liong says, "The Verse is very difficult to read. It is written in a dialect of the kini script that is open to much interpretation." You say, "I can read the kini. All students of young age can." Poet Liong says gently, "I do not doubt your literacy, Juritor. I am saying that a single mis-spoken word, and the magic of the poem is broken. This Verse is among the most difficult to read." "So you think I will not be able to correctly read the Verse, neh?" Poet Liong nods and smiles. "I like you, Juritor," begins the poet. "You seem to have a passion that glows from within. Very rare in these times." Liong continues, "Over there is the grave of one of our honored dead from the Days of Steel Tears. We buried him where he lay, as a reminder of how close the battle came to destroying Tanvu." Poet Liong says, "I will grant you the poem. Go to the grave and activate it, reading the Verse. If you possess the proper skill, you will call forth the shade of an ancestor." You thank Liong. "I warn you again, Juritor, that a single misstep can be disastrous." Honored Deceased (Entertain ) As you finish reading the poem, a spectral form appears of a dead warrior. The warrior waits for you to begin speaking. "Honored deceased, I am Juritor <name>, of the Empire." The spirit soldier watches you carefully, gesturing vaguely from time to time. "I have come to call you forth, though to be honest, I do not know why." The spirit soldier fades from view to the point you feel you are addressing the grave more than the spirit. You say, "Please return. Do you even speak?" The spirit's faintly glowing face gives you a non-committal look. You say, "Very well then, I can see this is getting me nowhere. I may as well tell you the story of the wall, the emperor and the donkey." At this, the spirit both alarmed and amused, and [sic] speaks, "That story is still told?" Inferring his meaning, you say, "It has become legend, despite how unlikely it is to have happened." The spirit says, "I was there when the donkey bit the emperor." Honored Deceased (Convince ) You say, "I did not summon you forth from your re-connection with Jin to talk about an old story." The spirit relates, "Why not? It is often why we are dragged from our time in transition." The spirit gives you a canny look, and says, "Go on, ask the question." You ask, "What is it like being dead?" The spirit says, "Everyone asks this question. There is death, and the final death, of course..." "In the final death, your spirit is finally released from want and illusion. Here, I can see things more clearly - the emotions streaming through your mind, the passions of the people around, it all burns bright and is as easy to read as kini." You ask, "Do you seek a re-connection with Jin?" "Of course. It is a work of six thousand days, however. And each time I am pulled back to the realm of the living, it slows down my release." You apologize at this revelation. You say, "I will likely return, honored solider. Lan Cho Puregrace wished to know if I could read the Verse of Filial Piety. It must be because I will ask you something on her behalf." The spirit nods with a hint of weariness, wisps of spirit stuff floating off his head. Quest Completion Lan Cho half closes her eyes and says: "Ah, I can see you have learned something of that which consumes Jin." "Jin needs us in our battle against the Ulvari. Our islands literally depend upon our prowess in battle." "I hope that with this new verse you have acquired, you can succeed where others have failed."
