What they say
The parley
Quest Offering Open Allister frowns at you, removing a speck of something from his shirt, and says, "I am afraid that the heartsworn are still plagued with ghosts. Duchess Heartsworn is not please, so Duchess Hilthorn is not pleased, and when Duchess Hilthorn is not pleased, I lose face. So please, go speak with those ghosts again, and do try to convince at least one to go, would you?" "Pass On" (1) You say, "NPC, why haven't you moved on?" "Why would I?" asks NPC. "Telon is my home!" "Well," you say, "it is the destiny of all who walk Telon to pass on to the afterlife though." "I imagine that with that being the case, it cannot be all that much different than home..." you say. NPC looks dubious. "But there is no proof of it," says NPC. "Why, there isn't even any proof that there is an afterlife." "Is that what troubles you?" you ask. "The uncertainty of it?" NPC asks, "Are you saying that I am afraid?" "All I am saying is that uncertainty is a daunting thing," you say, "Even the bravest men fear what they cannot grasp." NPC says, "Maybe I am... a little afraid. Me! Who feared nothing in life." "You cannot stay her only out of fear," you say. "And why is that?" asks NPC. "I think I am doing it fairly effectively right now." "Because you don't know what you are missing," you say. "Sure, you do not know exactly what awaits you but because of that, you do not know what is good that awaits you as well." "So you are saying... I could be cheating myself," says NPC. "You almost certainly are," you say. "If out of nothing else, then of answering the question of what lies beyond." NPC nods and says, "You are right. Why should I fear something if I do not know that there is something to fear?" I will have to think about that..." "Pass On" (2) You say, "NPC, don't you ever get bored up here?" "What do you mean?" asks NPC. "You are bound here, aren't you? Don't you ever get bored with it?" you ask. "Well," says NPC, "people do pass through... sometimes. My family, my admirers, those who want to hear my tales..." "But how often is that?" you ask. "More often that you would receive visitors, I assure you," snaps NPC. "Fair enough," you say, "but what of those moments when no one is around, what do you do?" "I think about my life... Observe the details of the room..." says NPC. "You can probably tell me exactly how many cracks are in the floor, can't you?" you ask. "Well, all but what are obscured by the furnishings..." says NPC. "Don't you think there is more awaiting you in the afterlife?" you ask. "You mean, another adventure?" asks NPC. "Well, yes," you say. "If nothing else, something new. Some change." "I have never though to conside it that way..." says NPC. "I have never thought of the afterlife as having anything exciting to it." "With all the figures of history there?" you ask. "Mixed up in one place? Interesting things are bound to happen." NPC nods and says, "You are right. I bet the afterlife has much more excitement than this room." NPC looks long around the room. "Maybe I will consider moving on..." "Pass On" (3) You say, "NPC, why do you haunt this place?" NPC blusters, "I am not haunting it!" "You are a ghost, and you will not leave," you say. "By all definitions, you are haunting it." "Nonsense, I am not a ghost," says NPC. "I killed many ghosts in my time, and I am no ghost!" "What would you call yourself then?" you ask. "Why I am a noble spirit," says NPC. "Remaining here to guard Telon." "To guard Telon? From here?" you ask. NPC visibly frowns. "Why, what do you mean?" "You are not exactly on the frontlines," you say. "Are you even able to move on?" "I... have not been able to leave this place, no, but I am sure that with enough effort, I could," says NPC. "I understand your need to glamorize to you position," you say. "But you must face the possibility that you are just a ghost." NPC is silent for a moment. "So, if I am a ghost, all I am doing is cheating myself from the rewards of my afterlife." "And perhaps there is nothing great waiting me here in Telon," says Ghost of Lady Merlene." You nod and say, "You may have been a great person in life, but death takes even the greatest one day." NPC seems to nod and says, "Perhaps you are right. If I am only a ghost, then I should move on. I must see proof before I know I am but a ghost though." "Pass On" (4) You say, "NPC, why are you holding on to this world?" NPC looks mildly offended. "Why wouldn't I?" asks NPC. "Well," you say, "you are dead. Your time has passed." "So you think that my ability to contribute to this world is gone?" asks NPC. "You think they no longer need me?" "Ah, no," you say, "that is not exactly what I mean." "Then explain yourself, before you find out what I can still do," says NPC. "What I mean to say is that all heros have a legacy," you say. "A legacy that follows them into death." "If you never dies, if you never pass on, then your legacy cannot," you say. "So, are you saying that if I remain here, I will never have a legacy?" asks NPC. "Have you ever heard tales about heroes who are still around?" you ask. "Well, no," says NPC. "Legends and myths are made of the people and events of the past," you say. "They germinate in the wake of one's passing." "So, I will never be in any legends until I pass on?" asks NPC. "You shake your head. "I do not think so." NPC says, "Hmm. That is something to consider. To keep making legends, or to let them be born..." "Pass On" (5) You say, "You are looking a little translucent, NPC." "That, my friend, is because I am a spirit," says NPC proudly. "A spirit of a great knight from before your time." "Oh, I see," you say. "Forgive my ignorance." "You are forgiven," says NPC. "What can this spirit do for you?" "You can tell me why such a great spirit is doing wasting their time on Telon," you say. "What do you mean?" asks NPC curiously. "I would expect such a great spirit to have moved on by now," you say. "Unless you were called down, were you called down?" "Well, no", says NPC, "I never really left." "Oh!" you say. "You have been cheated, then. Or something went wrong!" NPC looks concerned. "You think there was an error?" asks NPC. You nod and say, "One such as yourself does not belong here. You belong among the great spirits, basking in the glory of divine radiance." "I... I do, don't I?" asks NPC. You nod and say, "It is a shame that you are currently being denied it." "The truth is, I can pass on when I like," says NPC. "But I beleive my place to be here. Perhaps it is not though." Quest Completion Opeth says, "You think they might really be considering moving on then?" I suppose that will have to do." [Continue] "I still doubt your effectiveness," says Opeth. "As you have failed once before. But we will see."
