Editor's Notes

Was once named 'Elven Magic School'.

Kaon's Rush is a very common stop for characters as they progress their way through the late teens and early 20's. And while wandering the area around Arlinora's Retreat it is inevitable that at some point they will stop dead in their tracks and gape. The first time the green mists part to reveal the great floating islands and the Oculus of the Lyceum is truly one of the most memorable moments in the game for those that have experienced it. When people are showing Vanguard off, the Lyceum's Oculus is inevitably one of the featured attractions.

The Oculus is, in fact, only a small piece of what is one of the greatest of the early 20s dungeons, The Fallen Lyceum of Ingolas. The questline for the Lyceum starts from one of two NPC's, found standing next to each other at Arlinora's Retreat. Choose wisely, as once you side with one, the quests of the other will be forever lost to you.

Once underway you will be caught in the middle of a number of conflicts-the elves versus the Sages Arcane, the students versus the headmasters and a mysterious third party represented by a talking cat who just seem to want to shut down the enire mess.

The Fallen Lyceum is primarily an "open air" dungeon. You will be spending most of your time there on what was the Lyceum grounds, occasionally entering the different schools to accomplish various objectives. Although the quests will take you all over the campus, most of your time will be focused in the front half of the school. Once you near the end of the quest chain, however, you will need to make your way through the entire place in order to reach the grand finale of the Oculus.

The mobs are thick and of an impressive variety. You'll fight lava elementals, ice elementals, trees, fairies, brownies, students, teachers, undead, sprites, spiders and even a wyvern on your way through the quest series. Respawn rate is reasonable but due to the density of opponents in some areas it is very easy to find yourself on the wrong end of a 6+ mob pull. Named mobs are everywhere and itemization is very strong. Uncommon and rare items will drop with enough frequency that everyone in your group should come out of here with a couple of new pieces of gear.

The quest series is intricate and well put together. Apart from some minor issues that are easy to work around and what seems to be some 'missing' steps involving the Headmasters in the final quest, the quests are solid and lead smoothly into each other as they progress you forward through the dungeon.

The only let down, perhaps, is in the rewards. The excellent itemization makes up for it to a degree but apart from the last quest the only quest loot you'll be getting is experience and coin. A little more attention could be payed to this aspect to turn this dungeon from a place everyone would like to visit into a place that everyone really wants to visit.

Also be aware that there are some spots in here that will bring most systems to their knees. On computers that normally run the game at 30-40 FPS, chugging down to 5-10 fps can be a touch frustrating. These slow downs seem to occur in exterior areas where lots of the elementals are clustered.

The Lyceum hides many visual wonders and the atmosphere of a school overrun with the chaotic side of magic is extremely well done. You will leave the Lyceum with an overflowing screenshot folder and the experience of having been in one of the definitive dungeons of Vanguard.

Lore

During the orc and goblin invasion thirty years ago, many of the Lyceum's senior students were sent to aid in Thestra's defense. Their absence left a void in the hierarchy of the remaining students and a student named Ghaldrid, gifted in the magics of Chaos, rose to prominence in their absence. He formed a cult known as "The Cult of the Whisper" and soon they controlled the school.

It is unknown what exactly the Cult did that shattered the school and left part of it floating in the sky. Elementals and Kaon now roam the grounds. Inter-planar rifts have manifested in the surrounding areas making it easy to determine that they were in some way tampering with the very fabric of reality. It is rumored that Ghaldrid still resides in the Lyceum somewhere. If so, the abilities he might have gained in chaos and in manipulating reality would make him an incredibly dangerous foe.

The elves wish to regain the Lyceum and put an end to the Cult and the Kaon magic. The Sages Arcane wish to investigate what they regard as 'violations of inter-planar travel law' and to restore order to the Lyceum since the elves are clearly not up to doing so themselves. The elves suspect that the Sages secretly wish to obtain the secrets of Kaon magic for themselves. It's up to you to decide which side to assist.
