Editor's Notes

The Serpent of Sihari is an innocuous looking shipwreck on the beach just outside of Lomshir. A few scraggly undead totter their way around it. If you peek inside you see about what you expect to. Some tougher undead amid the wreckage of an old ship. All too many people move on from there and never discover what the Serpent truly hides-one of the most spectacular low level dungeons in the game.

The layout has an unfortunate flaw in that an exploring party can find it extremely easy to wander into the larger dungeon without ever encountering the questgiver for it. Apart from that, the layout is extremely atmospheric and very unique. The flaw could be fixed by moving the "breach", moving the questgiver or somehow restricting access to the breach until the quest for it has been obtained.

Mob placement is well done. The ship is full of wanderers and prolonged battles with multiple adds are easy to get into. The larger dungeon starts out with single pulls with double pulls for quest areas and then escalates as one goes deeper to double pulls and then triple pulls being standard. Add in some wandering trios and you have a smooth difficulty progression the deeper you go.

Itemization is pretty standard. Named mobs drop interesting loot. Unnamed mobs drop standard vendor trash with a very occasional exception.

The questline is good as far as what's there. Unfortunately, the main questline ends about halfway into the dungeon, finishing up just before the party reaches the larger and more challenging areas. The only real incentive for them to continue is in the spirit of exploration. If they assume that there's a follow-up quest, however, and pull out of the dungeon to turn in the quest they are then faced with the prospect of fighting their way all the way back down through the respawns. As powerful of a motivator as exploration might be, redoing half of the dungeon in order to do it is an equally powerful incentive to move on.

Sadly, the quest rewards are just some copper and experience.

The real reason to do the Serpent of Sihari is the nature of the dungeon itself. The atmosphere is top notch, the dungeon is beautiful and really gives low level characters the feel of conquering a significant evil. Possibly more than any other low level dungeon, Sihari captures the essence of discovery and adventure and should be on the 'must see' list of every dungeoneer worth the title.

Lore

The Serpent of Sihari wrecked several years ago on the beach of Lomshir during what may have been a standard beaching manuever to resupply or may just as well have been an attempted pirate raid on Lomshir to resupply. It is rumored that she carried in her cargo a beautiful blue diamond that may have had mystical properties. Perhaps this is what brought her to her doom.

The ship is named for Sihari, Goddess of the sea, chaos and storms. Also known as the "Dark Lady of the Sea". Her symbol is a swirling whirlpool or a mass of tentacles. Sea zombies are sailors who disrespected Sihari at sea which may have a lot to do with the current state of the crew of The Serpent of Sihari.

Or it could have something to do with an ancient evil and lots of demons. Guess you'll have to go there and find that out...
