1. Yes, as a sorcerer I can summon mana shards every once in a while that restore my energy. Most of the fighter classes care about endurance (which regenerates more rapidly) more than energy.
Saivior · 12-20-2006, 09:22 AM
I was hoping the class would look more like the Elemental from GuildWars, by having 4 elements and when two are combined different effects occur. ex: "Ice Shard" Target takes X damage and is slowed 50% for 30 sec. If hit by a lightning spell the target is rooted.
But maybe this will come with their attack chains.
Great preview, though.
Burrix · 12-20-2006, 05:04 PM
I have to somewhat agree here.
Who knows what the class can do at higher levels though...
The utility they do have:
Mantles--buffs that protect the target(s) from arcane, fire & ice, or all energy types at once
Barriers--buffs that either raise the armor class (AC) or energy regeneration rate of the sorcerer
Amplifications--buffs that change the damage, cast time, or energy cost of the next spell the sorcerer casts
Wards--buffs that protect the target(s) from spell damage
Invisibility--buffs that make the target invisible for a short duration
Movement impairment wrought by the ice spells (70%, for 8 secs)
A short-term root (?)
The ability to remove one of the target's buffs
The sorcerer can conjure rings that add to INT and WIS and provide other special abilities.
She can also summon an Energy Shard that can be used in combat to regain a massive amount of energy. The recast on Energy Shard is long.
Counterspells
I do like the potential of the spells Disperse (Blocks the next spell from the targeted enemy) and Mimic (Mimics the arcane spell just used for a critical and does up to 3 times the damage of that spell. Mimic can only be used for a brief time after an arcane spell hits for critical damage and has a long recast. It is possible for Mimic to score a critical hit, too.).
But if we compare these to the druid her spells, Silence (Prevents an opponent from casting a spell for 30 seconds), Tranquility (Shelters an opponent protecting them from all damage for 20 seconds.) and Hibernate ( Forces an opponent to hibernate disabling their movement and attacking for 40 seconds.) the sorcerers are less attractive.
It's hard to compare with a class like the druid though as the druid preview had an extra section called "Other Notable Spells and Abilities" which listed some special and very good abilities of the druid.
Still undecided between the druid and the sorcerer...
PS There's a typo in the Sorcerer Class Guide Preview under VI. Debuffs.

Thanks :)
Sorry, but no :(
Ralsu · 12-20-2006, 06:05 PM
Oh, and the summoning of the rings. Don't get excited. This is an ability from EQ1 as well. By the time you get this spell if you don't already have an item in that slot that is better then[sic] what this spell summons you soon will. You will use this only for a short time at best then in will be put in the back of your spell book and forgotten. However, I am not in beta and don't know the intricases of the game. IE. what level you get better gear and maybe there is an ability point in raising the quality our your summoned gear.
This is not the case at all so far.
vikingstaff · 12-31-2006, 11:28 AM
On an individual, exploration note, invisibility is a powerful ability for any class. How many of us have envied those that have been able to sneak around in advance of their levels simply because they could go invisible? I know I used to . . .:holiday_biggrin:
Ralsu · 12-31-2006, 01:29 PM
very powerful. game-changing
the potential to deal large doses of damage via fire spells
boom
and the ability to slow enemies via cold based spells will serve important roles if they make it to launch!
Don't let those runners aggro nearby mobs!
invisibility is a powerful ability
Means a lot in Vanguard. A lot.

Ralsu · 12-31-2006, 11:21 PM
Yeah. I've picked up on this confusion.
Most arcane spells provide feedback, an effect that generally returns 20% of the original cost of the spell back to the sorcerer over a few seconds.
Emphasis is mine. Feedback returns roughly 20% of the cost (energy) of the spell. That is, you get 1/5 of your energy back over a few seconds--usually 5-6.
That said, there is a line of spells above the level 12 spells I covered that damage the sorcerer, too. I will post back in a few days...

I agree with this. I'm level 11, have only gotten 1 ring as a quest reward and still use my Conjured ring all the time.
Ralsu · 01-10-2007, 07:01 PM
Yeah, all the way up to level 20, Ralsu wore his summoned rings. Hard to beat that scaling INT and WIS. Not only that, I loved traveling around with enduring breath prior to underwater mobs. Then when I'd hit a dungeon with invisible mobs (like Kalendra's Coven), I would change out for the ring that grants see invisibility. I loved the versatility.
Grimore Valentine · 01-10-2007, 07:09 PM
You can't beat it :P I still use them, different ones for different situations, you never need to get another ring to replace it :P.
The rings I'm currently using are The Conjured ring, and the Infineum Ring of Destruction quest reward (when the server comes back up I'll post the stats for it).

Fireball is fine, its an AE based spell, its not really for single target DPS (Mana cost is pretty high compairably). But the spell you eventually get "Flame Spear" is sorta the Taq's spell line for Fire spells, however, Flame Spear is on a 3 second casting time, and like a 15 second recast, which makes the spell only useful as an opener and not as a main form of DPS, I personally don't like this, the spells damage should be increased considerably, or make it more in line with Taqmir's spell line, dropping the casting and recharge of the ability.
Another thing of mine is that I don't think a DOT is really a Sorcerer thing, I think that instead of a DOT passive effect on the spell line that it should be more like a burn effect, or something that allows more damage for a short period of time, IE a "Burn" effect that will stack and increase the damage of fire spells done to the mob per each stack of the effect.
:)

I think though once they redo the spell effects this would help a lot. For instance the first fire spell you get, Desturction (i think), is an awesome spell but I don't feel like I'm doing anything. It needs a big fire explosion and I need to do a quick spell cast motion.
Oh well, hope I'm not spamming the boards too much with my "they really really really need to upgrade the casting animations, casting sounds, spell effects and hit sound/looks etc". Bolts need to travel quickly or at least look forceful when you see them being shot... when a caster casts they need to look like they're preparing to unleash some pain, when spells hit you need to go "ooo that had to hurt!" (without looking at the combat log heh).
See Lineage2 for some cool bolts. WoW has some good ones too and casting animation is great. EQ2 has some okay effects but I didn't like their casting and I didn't like how none of the spells come from the casters but all just came from nowhere in the sky.
I really felt if they took L2's sounds and explosions with WoW's casting animations and no other changes, combat would be twice as fun.

The instant casts are so the sorcerer can do what they are ment to do: Burst DPS.. however if you sustain your burst DPS, you can still have sustained DPS for any pro-longed encounters (currently its kinda bad [our sustained dps] but its getting tweeked in the near future most likely).
As for the graphics I agree that they do need some tweeking, but they are changing around the abilities firs,t getting the medium right, then they'll work on graphics.. The ER graphic is also back in and working correctly.

I like instants, don't get me wrong. I just prefer a few power boom instants and the rest quickie casts. I usualy expect instants to be power explosion things so I guess it comes down to the art: it's not making me feel I'm doing a spell other than clicking a button. Compare this to WoW's Warlock Conflag ability that's instant and it puts a grin on my face when that goes off "BOOM!"
PS. What's 'ER'?

I understand all that :) But well, at level 8 You can't expect much of a "boom" :P. Anyways Our overall burst DPS is probably getting increased somewhat, by how much I am not sure.
Grimore Valentine · 01-13-2007, 09:44 PM
To put it simply.. yes.
Mimic works on the base numbers of the spell you casted, and then it adds an extra percent, I don't know the exact percents all I know is thats about how it works. Each rank gives a higher %.
Timmerwink · 01-13-2007, 10:00 PM
This is not directed at you in any way but instead to any devs who happen to be reading this:
I can definitely expect more 'Boom' that what the sound of clicking the hotbar icon to cast the spell makes! When the 'click' from the UI hotbar is more impressive than the 'boom' of the spell, that's not acceptable ;)
/end rant #245 at lack of cool spell effects (which I should stop making since Brad said they are currently doing new effects)
Obso · 01-13-2007, 10:08 PM
Another question! The Chaos Volley (believe that is the name, it's the spell that increase damage from each succesive use) spell, how exactly does it work? Does it put a debuff on the mob, or does the spell just suddenly do more damage? Oh, and how much does it increase from each use?
Last but not least, is it worth spamming for high damage?

The spell does more damage (you'll notice it in your combat log.. and if you don't notice it you need glasses) with every cast, it doesn't put a debuff on the mob it just scales.. how much it scales depends on your INT/SDF and the Rank of CV you are casting. I don't know the specific numbers, because its all in a range.
Yes, it is worth spamming for high damage, but its dangerous ;)
Macros · 01-17-2007, 10:35 AM
Trust me, you DO NOT want longer casting times. every extra second of casting and recast time takes away from your DPS. check out the EQ2 wiz boards to see all the rants about how casting times killed wiz DPS.
Timmerwink · 01-17-2007, 11:11 AM
Yes, EQ2 went the other way around. But in EQ2 there are almost no quickie casts, they're all about the same. And cast time only takes away from DPS assuming spell damage is constant while cast times aren't.
But I was talking about the feel of the spells as to a Sorceror. For instance, in EQ2 I don't like the melee classes because almost all melee abilities have a cast time. This just feels wrong to me and makes the melee classes feel just like casters. To me (and it's just a 'me' thing) casters take time to do their damage, melee do their moves instantly.
Also, to repeat as I've said inbetween what you quoted me and now: it's more the feeling of the instants. The instant cast animation is lacking and the spells that are instant cast are lacking in visuals and sound leading to a very unexciting spell cast taking away from the feeling that I am doing anything magical.
Macros · 01-17-2007, 08:44 PM
I understand what you mean about spell animations and the feel of actualy doing something. I found this in beta patch notes,
4.) Graphics
4.1) Particle Effects
Will the spell graphics be improved?
Yes. There is a team/slew/heap/boat load of artists working on it as we speak.
- Darrin McPherson, Senior Game Designer
so hopefully this will improve as I am for anything that improves immersion. I just dont want to see VSoH go the same way EQ2 did and gimp the Sorc/wiz class by making them tier 2 or 3 DPS.

I saw that on the FAQ too and it made me happy. Thanks for quotting it again, though. It's good to see they know they need to redo them too. Honestly, combat effects are downright terrible. I have stated that if they could get the animations exciting, better sound effects and good special effects (this does not mean over the top EQ2 craziness but 'good'), combat would seem much more exciting. Heck, try watching StarWars on a 12" tv in mono sound or muted. It ain't exciting ;)
KagamiKyoji · 03-30-2007, 03:07 AM
I want them to bring back Silence and Drain Energy! You want a way to kill a healer? Well there ya go.
schroedingercat · 07-14-2007, 08:00 AM
the animations are pretty awful in the game. as for particle effects i can say only the druid's are considered "okay" as far as im concerned.
honestly most of the characters look like re-skinned luclin models from eq1. sure you can get a ton of variety with your face, but your hair is all the same and you have the same stiff, jerky animations.
Marquis · 01-17-2008, 11:01 AM
Grim when is this going to take a upwards scale, i seen the cooldown in CV the cast timer for seradon come down. Was this the change in Sorc Damage you were talking about cause it lowered DPS, refresh timers suck on most our spells. We should have a instant continous spell like a missile or arcane knife for 800-1000 damage for relative energy cost so we can compete with rangers that can shoot arrows for eternity then some.
the battle regen if our mana stones worked so we could recharge them without waiting a hour each or after login if we didnt use it the day before would be nice. If we could give these to other casters would be nice to.
Just curious i am awaiting a good thing for sorcerors but so far have seen nurfs, i was dissappointed when reaching 50 to find out my big spell gain was a AOE spell it is nice but should have been given before that and its not used much for Dungeons and Raids unless you just up to pissing off rest of group.
