What they say

The parley

Kajen Shandar
Quest Offering Kajen gives you a grave nod when you approach him. "Good timing. We have found Baljir. It seems he is in Khal, but not for long. He is just gathering the last of the texts he needs and then he is going to put into motion his foolish plans. You need to stop him. I'm not sure what assistance I can offer in such a short time frame, but if I can send help, I will. In the meantime, it is up to you and the Ahgram conscripts that are on the way. I have an item that will help you suppress his magical powers." You receive Scroll of Persona Magic Shielding NPC Farad Baljir (Primal Conclave) "This show is over, Baljir," you say to the man as you approach behind him. "Your magic is useless, and my abilities are at full potential. And it looks like your hired goons are nowhere to be found." Baljir turns away from the books he was frantically searching through. "Damn it! How did you find me?" "You aren't as clever as you think," you reply. "You reek of desperation." Baljir eyes you dangerously. "Hmph!" "Do the right thing and surrender," you advise him. "You don't want to make things worse for you than they already are." "You don't understand," Baljir sneers, the man's cultured tone carrying a razor edge. You shake your head. "I understand. You're making a selfish play for power using all sorts of horrid acts. Including trying to use a threat to all of Qalia as a political tool. It's sick." Baljir attempts a spell, but the scroll you used seems to be effective. He swears. "It's over, Baljir. Come with me quietly," you warn him. "I. Will. Not," he seethes. "I'm so close! I have almost all the spells. The elemental forces of this land are but a tool for me." "Then I will take you by force. Without your magic, you can't stop me," you reply. "My spells may not work," Baljir concedes, steepling his fingers together while taking a step back. "But my devices will!" Baljir reaches into his sleeve and produces a small crystal rod and activates it, causing the politician to teleport away. You noticed he left behind some books and a scrap of paper on the floor. You pick up the scrap. You receive Baljir's Paper Farad Baljir (Khal Docks) Baljir's features darken as he sets his gaze upon you. " (Your name) ," he manages, spittle flying from his mouth. "Nice try, Baljir," you say with a smirk. "You are forcing my hand," Baljir says darkly. "You can keep trying to escape. I'll still find you," you warn him, reaching for your weapon. "You think my intentions purely selfish," the nobleman says. "You misunderstand me." You raise an eyebrow at him. "What do you mean?" "The Sultan is weak, you know. If he was willing to make bolder moves, he could halt the onslaught of the dark forces that threaten Qalia," Baljir says with a slight smile. "It must be nice to have all the answers," you mockingly reply. He chuckles. "Jest if you must. But my research has proven what most in the palace already suspected. These elementals can be banished or destroyed with the correct spells." "Don't be ridiculous." You frown a little, watching his face closely. "Are you telling me you have spells to stop them them. And that you want to stop them. But you refuse to unless you are the new sultan?" "Not quite." Baljir shakes his head sadly. "The current sultan is weak, as I said. He lacks the fortitude to master these spells. I suspect he knew of their existence, but refused to use them." "You're going to have to explain a little more. That doesn't make any sense, Baljir," you say suspiciously. "These spells require certain ... sacrifices. Of the people variety," he says with a touch of amusement. "To properly deal with the elementals, thousands of individuals would have to be sacrificed to fuel this magic." "That's sick," you reply, running your eyes over Baljir in disgust. "Why do it at all then? What purpose would it serve?" "Because if I was in charge, I could pick those who should be sacrificed," he replies. "I would remove the undesirables from society, the poor and the meager, and strengthen Ahgram and solve the current crisis. Simple and elegant." "You have no right to make that decision, and I've heard enough of your twisted designs," you say, taking another step towards him. He produces a hidden scroll while laughing at you. "You did not think I was out of tricks yet, did you? This summoning scroll should keep you busy while my power returns." Before you can stop him, he recites the words of power and finishes the spell. Baljir drops the scroll and a stream of dark mist seems to come from the parchment. However, something seems to be happening with Baljir. "Wait!" you call out. "What did you do?" Baljir's smile fades and his body starts to spasm. He falls to the ground, blood pouring from his nose and mouth. A dark, swirling, glacial like figure manifests beside the dying Baljir and finishes him off by driving a black ice-tipped spike through his back. The politician crumples to the floor, and you are left facing the monster he summoned. Elemental Fiend " (Your name) . Your efforts ... are useless." The elemental fiend keeps its gaze steady on you. "What are you?" You look, surprised, between the dead Farad Baljir and the fiend. "What did he do?" The creature's voice is echo-like and fuzzed. "I am free. The one called Baljir used the wrong scroll." "It looks like he gets careless when he's in a corner. I can't say I'm that upset you took care of him, but what are you?" you ask. "Baljir was using me for his tests and experiments," the creature replies. "He had failed to produce results, and his failure is now complete." "So he could carry out his plans?" you ask. The creature says nothing, and starts to shift towards you. You stand ready to defend yourself. "I'm not here to fight you. Why don't you just leave now that you are free?" The elemental pauses. "I suppose it would not matter. The ending is inevitable anyway." You hear some shouting on the docks. Maybe the creature realizes its predicament. You point at it. "You should leave now if you don't want to be overwhelmed by the guards. Know that Qalia is not your toy." The creature shifts toward the water. "Your efforts are futile. Your time is over." The elemental field absorbs itself into the water, and disappears from view. Quest Completion Kajen greets you with a large smile. "Amazing, my friend. As expected, you have come through for us and for all of Qalia with skill and grace. Baljir will no longer trouble anyone any longer." Kajen hands you a rolled scroll. "This is from the Sultan. He considers you one of his trusted advisors, and has given you the power to speak in his name. In addition, since Baljir's fortunes have been confiscated, we would like to give you a special treasure from his personal collection. Please take your pick."
