Willem's Stand is a lore serial which, in a report to General Tiburon, chronicles the fall of Targonor, focusing on the deeds of Captain Rastus Willem during the Undead Invasion.
There are several contradictions to Captain Willem's character as it is portrayed in the chronicle, and he is variously described as a brute, a drunkard, a conspirator of the Crimson Ring, and yet a good soldier and hero of the final defense of Targonor.
Four distinct groups of primary documents, mainly letters salvaged from Targonor, piece together some of the disparate facets of the man's character from the point that Willem joined the Red Blade Unit to replace Captain Algan, who was injured by a wagon accident.
The letters chronicle Willem's arrival in the Red Blades, signs that the Vulmane are under attack, and the discovery that the attacks are an invasion of Undead. As the Vulmane are driven to the forests of the Elves and the Halflings flee Willowroot, Targonor prepares for defence. The Gold Eagle Brigade leads the march against the invaders, are wiped out, and then rise to join the ranks of the Undead.
The rest of the chronicle is the first-hand account of one Pepran Baldarus, a royal scribe who is the last known person to have left Targonor alive.
Letters from Captain Willem to Commander Askalon
Commander Winston Askalon is Captain Willem's immediate superior, and these letters, mainly official reports, provide glimpses into the progress of the war against the Undead.
Letters from Captain Willem to an unnamed lord
Addressed only to 'Liege', it is evident from these letters that Captain Willem believes his Captaincy of the Red Blades was arranged by this unknown. It also becomes apparent that Willem's master is involved in smuggling some kind of unknown items into the city, and that Willem is expected to smooth their entry without inspection. However, as the invasion begins to overwhelm the city, Willem starts to balk at time spent on smuggling rather than defence, and he appears to make a difficult break with his past connections to focus on the invasion.
It is possible that Willem's correspondent is a member of the Crimson Ring.
Account of Pepran Baldarus
Commencing when the dead are within three day's march of the city of Targonor, Baldarus shows little sign of Taggart's disparaging opinion of Willem. This is a close and personal account of the last days of the city of Targonor, of King Horus Targonor Furth and those who stood with him to hold the Undead back long enough for its citizens to flee beyond their reach.
The Red Blades are one of the few units remaining in the city when the decision is made to delay the Undead, and though Willem is haggard and exhausted, he shows no sign of incompetence as he fights for every hour.
Letters of Edonus Taggart
Edonus Taggart was a soldier of the Red Blade Unit, who greatly respected his former Captain, Algan, and has concerns about Captain Willem's abilities given rumours of demotion, and involvement in the murder of Chancellor Kerrick. He sees signs of alcoholism in the Captain, and comes to believe he is corrupt and incompetent.
